Helanya joined Econex at the start of 2013. She received a MCom in Economics from Stellenbosch University in 2009, and a MSc in Competition and Regulation cum laude from Utrecht University, NL in 2016. Prior to working at Econex, Helanya worked for three years as a Senior Economist for the Western Cape Department of Agriculture.
In her capacity at Econex, Helanya has completed projects on different aspects of competition policy, including merger analyses, concerted practices, and excessive pricing claims. She recently presented an analysis of the Telkom/BCX (2015) merger at the annual conference of the Association of Competition Economics (ACE) in Amsterdam. Helanya has also conducted economic analyses of regulatory intervention and tax policy, as well as trade analyses of import tariffs and anti-dumping duties. She has advised clients in various sectors, such as telecommunications and broadcasting, manufacturing, energy, agriculture and healthcare. Select clients include Cell C, Telkom, ICASA, National Treasury, Eskom and SAB. She enjoys breaking down complex problems into their simplest form, and communicating the answers in a clear and concise manner.
