Rachel Jafta is co-founder, director and chairperson of Econex. She is a Professor in Economics at the University of Stellenbosch. Her research interests are in industrial economics, economics of innovation, international trade and Black Economic Empowerment. Rachel has extensive consulting and research experience in trade and competition issues, regulatory economics, as well as technology management. She has authored publications in all of these fields. She holds a B.Econ (Hons) from the University of the Western Cape, and an M.Econ and PhD in Economics from the University of Stellenbosch.
At the University of Stellenbosch, Rachel has received awards for excellence in research and community service. Since 2004, she has won the award for excellence in teaching each year. In 2008 and 2010, she received the Rector’s Award for Excellence in Community Interaction. In 2011, she was the recipient of the University of Stellenbosch’s Award for Exceptional Alumni. Rachel maintains close ties with academic institutions in Europe and the United States, but is also involved in private sector activities, including as non-executive director of a large company with global links in media and advanced technology. She is the founder of two large community development trusts.
