What we do

We have established ourselves as one of the leading firms in competition economics when it comes to the analysis of mergers, competitive practices and abuse of dominance complaints in South Africa as well as the southern Africa region. Our work is focussed on markets where regulatory challenges emerge or persist, and where decision makers need in-depth economic analysis to make optimal decisions. Econex has assisted regulators (such as the Competition Commission and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa) as well as private sector companies with detailed economic analyses. As a result, we have developed highly regarded practices and deep expertise especially in the energy, telecoms and health sectors.

Econex has provided expert economic advice in many high profile litigation cases for companies that are leaders in their respective fields. Examples include the recent battle around mobile termination rates, disputes around regulatory charges such as the Transnet Multiproduct Pipeline tariffs, the dispute between Kumba and Mittal on the pricing of iron ore, the pricing of medicines (New Clicks) and logistics and dispensing fees (Transpharm and Medirite), etc.

In addition, we have been involved in trade analysis in relation to the effects of tariffs (e.g. the import tariffs on frozen chicken), export taxes (e.g. as proposed on scrap metal), and anti-dumping duties (e.g. the dumping of soda ash).
