Econex is a leader in the field of merger analyses and delivers comprehensive reports on the competition consequences of proposed mergers. We have been involved with merger analyses since the inception of South Africa’s competition regime. Prof Theron gave evidence in the first large merger to be decided before the Competition Tribunal in 1999, between Santam and Guardian National. Other large mergers on which we have provided economic reports and given expert advice include the merger between Primedia and Kaya FM, Prodoclinics and Protector, MTN and iTalk.

We also advised New Clicks on its acquisition of Purchase Milton and Associates (PM&A), and assisted BP and Masana in opposing the Uhambo (Sasol / Engen) merger. In the food sector, we advised Pick ’n Pay on two of its mergers: the first being the successful merger between Pick’nPay and Score supermarkets, and the second the proposed merger with Fruit & Veg City, which was terminated after the Competition Commission recommended that it should be prohibited by the Competition Tribunal.
