Econex has extensive experience in the economic analysis of many prominent regulated sectors in South Africa. We have provided expert economic advice on competition and related regulatory issues to a number of companies in the telecommunications, health and energy sectors, among others.

Econex has been actively involved in the regulation of the health sector since 2004, when Prof Theron submitted an expert economic report on behalf of Clicks in the litigation around the single exit pricing system introduced by the Department of Health. More recently, Econex completed a full costing exercise of the planned NHI system for the Hospital Association of South Africa (HASA).

In the energy sector, Econex has provided economic analysis for a large oil company on the determinants of petrol prices. We have further advised the Department of Public Enterprises on the privatisation of SAFCOL by analysing the current state of competition in the forestry sector in SA, and have provided expert advice to companies active in the gambling industry. Most recently, we have assisted SAB with their commentary to South Africa’s Alcohol Taxation Review initiated by the National Treasury.
